Drink more water during the summer

Your bodily functions are at their optimum level at certain temperature. When the organism gets warm, it needs to be cooled. In order to cool our body, a sequence of related processes are happening in our body.  

Blood vessels dilate, they increase the blood flow in the skin and make your body lose excessive amount of heat. We start to sweat. Sweat evaporation cools the skin, and that helps the entire body to cool, and the excessive sweating may cause dehydration.

It is known that in the warm periods we sweat more, especially during increased physical activity in case of direct exposure to heat. Regular water consumption helps to compensate the fluids we lose through excessive sweating. If you don’t take enough, you may become dehydrated, and the combination of high temperature and dehydration, besides affecting your skin and appearance, may lead to serious health disorders.

Dehydration symptoms

When we get dehydrated, the first thing we feel is thirst, dry mouth, fatigue and dizziness. In addition, inertia is a sign of dehydration. Other symptoms include decreased urine output, dark yellow urine, rapid heartbeat, irritability and hollow eyes. Even the slightest dehydration can be a problem. Research shows that even without clinical symptoms dehydration reduces cognitive ability and physical coordination.


Advice on hydration in the hot weather

- Start the hydration immediately! It is much easier to maintain the balance of fluids if you start in a good hydration condition;

- Don’t drink big amounts of water at once , this may cause hyponatremia (reduction of the salts in the blood) , and instead of that – drink water often and in smaller amounts.

- Make a schedule for regular breaks during which you will drink beverages and always have a bottle of water at hand, which you will use for taking frequent sips of water while you are working or exercising;

- Consume fresh fruit like blueberries, watermelon, peaches or apricots;

How to make sure that you have drunk enough water?

  One way to check the body hydration is the color of your urine. If you are properly hydrated, it will be white, clear and you will urinate frequently. Also, your skin will be soft and elastic and your look fresh and healthy :)
